My three encounters, this week, during my five-mile rush-hour commute near Boston, MA:
1. Left turn only is just a suggestion.
The intersection between the Fellsway and Route 16 is, admittedly, one of the most complex intersections in Massachusetts. It, however, does have excellent signage. Pictured above are five lanes, three lanes marked for continuing towards Boston (indicated in green) and two left-turn lanes indicated in blue and red. The left turn lanes have over-head signs that say "Left Turn Only"; the lanes are painted with arrows pointing left; and dashed lines follow the path of the lanes onto Route 16.
I am in the right-most left-turn lane (blue line). As the light turns green and I begin to make my turn, the car immediately to my left (red line) continues straight. If I hadn't been alert, I would have collided with the Camry.
2. What is so difficult about left turns?
Two four-lane streets intersect. Competent drivers follow the green path, which allows drivers in both directions to turn left simultaneously.
A gentleman decided to follow a different path, highlighted in red. He faked us out by making it look like he was continuing straight onto Commercial Street. Then veered slightly towards his left (right on the map) before finding himself facing oncoming traffic, correcting with a sharp left and then abruptly stopping, blocking both lanes of oncoming traffic. After a short hesitation, the white Camry was on its way.
3. Guess what? Another left turn.
Watch out! This one isn't your typical 90-degree left turn – it's a bit sharper than that. The blue line indicates the path taken by an elderly woman. Yes, the line does go onto the sidewalk and then slightly into the oncoming lane.
What car do you think she was driving?
Did you guess Camry? If so... you're wrong! It was a Subaru Forrester XT.
